The Torch Flashlight

Being touted as the worlds most powerful Flashlight, this thing is definitely impressive. The company claims an output of 4100 Lumens. That’s like if you took two and a half standard 100 watt light bulbs and squeezed them into a flashlight.

There are a lot of devices that are influenced by the iPhone. While some imitations are more egregious, others are merely what one would expect as the technology in the iPhone is brought to the American market. Competition requires some imitation. That aside, Garmin’s first entry into the jungle that is the mobile phone market looks to be more than just a flattering imitation.

First of all, it makes no claims to being the fashion-forward lifestyle device that the Apple marketing team has trumpeted since its coming out party last January. Also, it boasts a list of functionality that the iPhone just doesn’t have.

MSL scarecrow test vehicle

Okay, admittedly I’m a bit biased. But Mars rovers are cool. I mean, seriously, we strap these 6 wheeled robots to the top of rockets and shoot them to mars where they roam around and do science for us. How cool is that! How many people could have imagined that 100 years ago?

Anyhow, finally got around to looking at the January issue of Wired and saw a small blurb on JPL’s newest creation the Mars Science Laboratory.

  • rocket-powered hovercrane to deliver it to the surface
  • Laser Vaporizer
  • Percussive Drill
  • Neutron Gun
  • Nuclear Power

Need I say more?

Check out this awesome Video of the Rover (26.6 MB):

Light Energy Studio

Wow, now that is awesome. Okay, so maybe I’m a geek, but I totally dreamed of having a room like that when I was a kid. Vibrant multicolored lights mixed with furniture is like the key to living in the future (or at least that’s what TV taught me), and it looks like Light Energy Studio has made living in the future available now.

Light Energy Studio Cocktail Table
Look at this kick ass table! I mean, at $6000 I probably won’t be purchasing one anytime soon, but seriously, having such a table would really tie the room together don’t you think?

I highly recommend checking out the site. Their home furnishings are quite unique, and the virtual tours are pretty sweet.

Wow, for a country that likes to lead the world, it sure seems like we really suck at leading this whole global climate change thing.

  1. Iraq just ratified the UN’s Kyoto Protocol on climate change. That’s right Iraq. Did I mention we are they only industrial nation that hasn’t signed on.
  2. At a rally, Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney proclaims “Don’t you understand, they don’t call it American warming, they call it global warming … We don’t need to have America have additional costs that the rest of the world doesn’t bear.”

I don’t really know what to say… i’m sort of speechless.

Oh Snap, 50 Years of LEGO

LEGO50anniversarypic

There’s a short list of things that have made me cry. LEGO’s are on that list. Arranged chronologically, it’s somewhere before my first experience with Microsoft Word 6.0 (circa 1995) and maybe a year after that time my balloon flew away. As a sidenote, I have never known how to pluralize this product, so bear with me. Anyway, like most people, Legoes are as close as I will ever get to building an Imperial Star Destroyer, and for that, I say thank you Denmark for your finest export. Here’s to 50 more years of instructions with confusing perspectives and so many pieces that I find it doubtful, at best, that I was the only kid brought to tears.

50 years is the gold anniversary. I don’t have any gold, so the color of this text will have to do. Happy Anniversary. If we both make it to your century mark, maybe I can do a little better.

Koss KSC-75 Headphones

The Koss KSC-75 Headphone is not a particularly glamorous set of headphones. These little clip on headphones reside near the bottom end of the headphone price spectrum. However, with a mere list price of $19.99, I think these headphones represent a huge value to anyone out there wanting to upgrade the headphones that came with their iPod or other portable media player.

Chances are you’ve already heard about the ridiculous criticism of Mass Effect by Kevin McCullough. (note: original article no longer online) You’ve probably also heard his apology, and seen the Fox News segment that ran shortly after the apology was issued. That segment got Electronic Arts to fight the good fight and request a correction; understandable, but still like Vader defending Luke in Return. Then things got really strange: Jack Thompson comes out and defends Mass Effect, a game rated M! That’s a bit like the Pope defending Stalin, for those of you who haven’t followed Mr. Thompson’s hijinks.

Tip ‘o the cap to Joystiq for great coverage.

Free Refills @ Starbucks

…and other perks coming soon from the perhaps-maybe-not so really-could be recession.

Good news–get excited!–Starbucks is going to start offering free refills (I suppose this is only on coffee, not my favorite caffeine-free Vanilla Bean whipped drink).
