Monocycle!

This thing is awesome.

It’s overpriced and I’m guessing it’s probably not great on a steep hill–but I still want one to call my very own. This gem from Hammacher Schlemmer will set you back $13,000, it travels 25 MPH, and it works for an adult shorter than 6’3″. There’s not much else to say, except that monocycles are sweet!

BMW vs Prius

The good folks over Times Online did a “real world” mileage comparison of the Toyota Prius and BMW 540d. Guess who won? The BMW!

Diesel Hybrid VW Golf (Front)

I love my Rabbit, but if I do have one complaint it’s mileage. I knew what I was getting into from the beginning; if I wanted fuel economy, I’d have purchased a Civic or Corolla like many of my other friends. Still, sometimes I just wish I didn’t have to fill up as often as I do. I had come to terms with having to trade enjoying driving my car for a few MPG’s until I saw this pretty blue baby.

You can’t buy this anywhere, but I just had to share. If this isn’t thoughtful, I don’t know what is.

Honda Del Sol turned X-Wing425px

I spotted this in traffic a few days ago. It is what appears to be a Honda del Sol (circa 1994) that has been completely outfitted to match Luke’s X-Wing from A New Hope. It’s got nearly everything I could expect from a mid-sized economy sports car turned intergalactic space fighter. From the accurately detailed R2 unit in the back (so much for that rearview mirror) to the side mounted guns with laser burns scorching the car near the tips, this is clearly the work of some mad genius. Rebel Alliance insignia decal and some other panelling details round out the realism, giving you the impression that it might just circumvent the traffic on the 405 and make the jump to hyperspace somewhere north of LAX and south of the Getty.

Mad Genius, I salute you. Click the pic to see all the details closer up. It also seems as if the driver is explaining something to his passenger, given his hand motions. My guess: his theory on how awesome he is.

If the maker/owner of this car reads this post, drop me a line; I’ve a got 2007 VW Rabbit that I think has TIE Interceptor potential.

morgan 1 thumb

I’ve got a thing for wood, and I’ve got a big thing for cars. Combine the two, and you have one of my favorite car makers, Morgan. For those of you that don’t know, Morgan is a British car manufacturer that still makes their chassis out of wood. I visited the LA Pen Show this past weekend with the rest of the Velvetron crew, and imagine my surprise when I saw a man who makes pens out of discarded wood from the Morgan factory! That right pens, and not just pens, pen accessories and usb drives.

Gizmodo Gallery

I thought the Telsa Electric Roadster had been scrapped, but I was wrong! Gizmodo has a nice little roundup of reviews. The overall message? 211 ft-lbs of torque at 0 RPM is awful news for a transmission, but also an awful lot of fun.
