In a fairly clandestine release (by Apple’s standards, anyway) the iPhone was updated today with a new 16GB model. The Touch also saw a refresh with a new, capacious 32GB SKU.
No huge surprise here, the masses have been waiting for the 16GB iPhone since the Touch was announced in September. That plus the falling price of flash memory for Apple makes this an overdue proposition. My only question is, why now? I suppose that Macworld was a bit busy with new product announcements and Apple’s stock has been pointed earthbound since we rang in the new year. Hopefully, a more spacious iPhone will help boost sales in the coming quarter and inspire a bit more investor confidence and optimism after the next earnings meeting.
Here’s the catch: it’s $100 more. Both the 16GB iPhone and 32GB Touch are $499, a $100 premium over their smaller siblings. Apple’s been known to introduce spec bumps on iPods and simply discount the lower-end models, but no, this update will ask you to part with an extra Franklin. Thanks, but no thanks. Throw in some 3G and you might have a deal, though.
