I’ve always been intrigued by records. Something about them always seemed so mystical. I didn’t really grow up with records. Sure, I vaguely remember getting a little record from McDonald’s (not sure if it was in the happy meal or what) and making my mom play it over and over, but for the most part my introduction into the world of recorded music started with cassette tapes.
Anyhow, as my obsession with audio grows, I am more and more intrigued by vinyl. I mean, so many people swear by it. Not sure if it’s the nostalgia, or the process involved, or if the sound is that much better that draws people to it, but I want in. I’ll admit, half of my attraction to the world of vinyl is due to its esoteric nature, but I really do want to hear what it sounds like. Unfortunately, I’ve sort of been afraid to take the plunge and try it out. I didn’t know how to start.
Well, lucky for me, the folks over at HomeTheaterTALK have written a GREAT little intro to vinyl. Here’s what I got:
- Look for an old used Technics SL-1200 to start with (should be around $75, although glances at ebay and CL seem to indicate they might be quite a bit more as they are sought after by DJs)
- Grab a Grado Black cartridge to go along with it (~$40)
- Print out an “alignment protractor” to properly setup the cartridge
- buy some nice looking records (rated mint, glass, mint-, or VG+ if they are rated)
- try to listen before buying records (although to be honest, I don’t know what I’m supposed to listen for… pops and crackles? maybe it’ll be obvious once i start)
- Wash your records before playing them (possibly with Discwasher brand products)
All in all it was a great read, and I highly suggest you read the whole article if you are interested. I for one am gonna start looking for a used SL-1200 and see what all this Vinyl hoopla is about!
